One Week Until Spring Golf

It’s official - our spring season is only one week away! To help you prepare for the season, let’s take a closer look at everything you can expect on the course and answer some frequently asked questions.

Junior Golf Lessons for ages 4-18 and all skill levels start on March second in the Kansas City area.

Spring is Here

Daylight Savings is right around the corner, which means it’s time for spring golf! Our season starts on Monday, March 2 and runs for twelve weeks.

Lessons are held throughout the Kansas City area and offered throughout the week. This year, we have five locations:

  • Topgolf in Overland Park, KS

  • Golf Ranch Shoal Creek in Kansas City

  • T-Shotz in Kansas City

  • Golf Ranch Lee’s Summit in Lee’s Summit

  • Paradise Pointe in Smithville, MO

These lessons are offered after school during the week or on Saturday afternoons. Lessons are open to all ages and all skill levels. No equipment or experience needed.

Additionally, enrollment is open throughout the season, so you can join whenever your schedule allows. Please note, you register for individual classes, so you do not have to attend all 12 weeks.

New Year, New Goal

For the last two years, our goal has been to grow the game of golf in the Kansas City area. In 2025, we were able to coach over 85 different kids, which would not have been possible without your support. This year, we are taking it a step further. This spring, our goal is to prepare kids for a summer on the course.

Regardless of their current skill level, we want to help kids gain the skills and confidence needed to tackle the course this summer. To do this, we designed a 12 week curriculum that will assess their current skills, strengthen the fundamentals, and help them develop a strategy for playing on the course.

First Week “Assessment”

The first week serves two purposes: an introduction to golf with KC Junior Golf and an opportunity to see what you know.

During the first lesson, juniors will complete a series of challenges to assess what they know. More specifically, we are looking to see if they know how to hold their club, align their feet, swing the different clubs, and execute different course strategies.

Our only goal this week is to understand your child’s experience level. We want to see what they know and how they think before we make any changes to their swing. Of course, if your child is brand new to golf, we will start by explaining the basics.

The Following Lessons

After understanding what each kid knows, we jump into building a course readiness. This means kids are building a consistent swing, developing a course strategy, and gaining confidence.

These lessons look very repetitive because we are trying to build a routine. You might here us ask the same question before every shot - where are you aiming, why that club, etc. Our goal is to get them to think about the situation and how they can achieve the desired outcome.

These lessons will include a lot of different skill games. Our golfers at Golf Ranch love the Go Fishing Game, but we also include some non-virtual games that keep golf interesting and create a fun twist that kids don’t necessarily see coming.

Measuring Progress

Each practice starts by reviewing that week’s focus area. The focus area changes each week, but it is specific to a technique, club, or strategy.

Additionally, the focus area can be modified to meet each golfer where they are at. For example, the overall goal might be choosing strong landing points for the driver. This can be modified for a new golfer (identifying the fairway) and a competitive golfer (accounting for the wind or slope).

Each practice ends with a self-reflection. Golfers will have the opportunity to think about what they learned and how well they understand it. After filling in their progress chart, kids will choose a sticker and their Birdie Bonus Board.

The Birdie Bonus Board

The Birdie Bonus Board is a new activity to help kids work on their game throughout the week. It includes different activities that can be completed at home, in the yard, or at the golf course. All of the tasks relate to that week’s lesson and are designed to keep kids interested in golf.

Kids who bring back a completed Birdie Bonus Board will receive a chance to take the Impossible Shot (a target based challenge to earn ice cream for the whole group).

Final Week

The last week is all about celebrating our progress. We will play our favorite games from the season, eat a sweet treat, and test our skills on the virtual course.

What ages can play? Our lessons are open to ages 4-18.

Does my child need their own equipment? Nope, we have extras they can use! We just ask that you let us know during the registration process, so we can be sure to have everything ready for your lesson.

What skill levels can play? Our lessons are open to all skill levels. We include a lot of games in our lessons, so we can meet every golfer at their current skill level.

Do we have to attend every lesson? Nope! You can register for individual lessons to create a schedule that works for you. Additionally, enrollment is open throughout the season, so you can start at any time.

Where are the lessons held? Lessons are offered throughout the Kansas City area. This Spring, we are at Topgolf in Overland Park, Golf Ranch Shoal Creek, Golf Ranch Lee’s Summit, T-Shotz in Kansas City, and Paradise Pointe in Smithville, MO.

How much are lessons? The cost depends on the class and location. In general, small group lessons are $25-$30 each week, and individual lessons are $40 each week.

Why is it more expensive than other programs? Not all junior programs are structured the same. Our program is intentionally designed to offer small groups, experienced coaching, and structured development.

What is the maximum group size? Driving range lessons are limited to three kids per group, and short game lessons are limited to five kids per group.

Who is the coach? All spring lessons are led by Coach Savannah, a former college golfer who competed in the NAIA National Championships for Women’s Golf and currently coaches college golf in the Kansas City area.

How is success measured? At the end of the day, the biggest indicator of success is that kids want to come back next week. Of course, we can also see progress through the weekly games and reflections.

Does my child have to complete the Bonus Birdie Board? Nope! This is just a fun way to help your kid practice throughout the week. We know there’s a lot of time between lessons, so we wanted to give you a few ideas to help you stay in the swing of things.

Are lessons cancelled due to weather?
